Job Summary:

The person hired for this position will be part of an engineering team that creates and develops some of 3M’s most advanced automated manufacturing process equipment. In this position the engineer will work as part of a core machine vision group, supporting 3M Brookings. The ideal candidate would have prior experience with automated inspection systems such as Cognex, Datalogic/PPT Vision, or AccuSentry.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Provide consultation, specifications, estimates, and solutions for machine vision systems

  • Assist in implementing machine vision to increase process performance

  • Work with internal/external resources to ensure technical, cost and schedule requirements are met

  • Communicate with equipment suppliers in the selection, purchase and delivery of commercial items.

  • Participate in the assembly/checkout of equipment in the fabrication shop and installation and commissioning of equipment in the 3M manufacturing plant.

  • Work with business partners to implement systems to continuously monitor process performance

  • Develop an understanding of industry and 3M technologies and participate in the advancement of the technology and intellectual property creation and protection.

  • Successfully interact with multiple discipline teams including 3M laboratories, engineering, manufacturing, and suppliers.

  • Communicate and actively participate in production/project teams.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Possess a technical diploma/degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two or more years experience in machine vision systems

  • Experience in sensors and measurements

  • Experience in programming e.g. C++, MATLAB, LabView

  • Experience with Cognex, Datalogic/PPT Vision, or AccuSentry Vision systems

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Self starter with the ability to work on a wide range of technical challenges

Location: Brookings, SD

Travel: May include up to 10% domestic/international
