The incumbent serves as a Medical Technician assigned to Pathology and Laboratory Medicine under the Diagnostic Services Line at the VA BHHCS. Laboratory care is delivered through the Fort Meade and Hot Springs (HS) VA Medical Centers, as well as through many community based outpatient and rural outreach clinics ultimately supporting Veterans residing in South Dakota, portions of Nebraska, North Dakota, Wyoming and Montana.
Incumbent chiefly serves as a "floating" Medical Technician. The incumbent is expected fill in wherever needed and will regularly be singularly responsible for the full range of laboratory work on evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, paid on-call rotations and extended emergency periods (i.e. snow storms) to primarily support the 24/7 operations of the Fort Meade VA Medical Center Emergency Room & the Hot Springs VA Medical Center Urgent Care Clinic (UCC).
Incumbent is expected to operate with a sufficient level of expertise to independently work and perform tests and examinations ranging from minimally complex waived testing to very difficult and highly complex non-waived testing. As such, the incumbent will typically function without on-site supervisory control whereby a pathologist or supervisory technologist is accessible only by telephone.
Incumbent will regularly independently perform a broad range of very difficult and highly complex tests and examinations which span all laboratory specialty areas such as (but not limited to)Phlebotomy, Transfusion Medicine, Chemistry & Toxicology, Hematology & Coagulation, Microbiology and Urinalysis.
Incumbent independently performs quality control on very difficult and complex tests, procedures, examinations and on elaborate and complex instrumentation with very fine settings and/or measurements.
Incumbent independently interprets quality control resultants and approves suitability to begin testing on patient samples
The incumbent will be placed on the paid on-call rotation and is required to report to duty within 30 minutes of a callback
Work Schedule: Rotating schedule including nights, weekends, holidays. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: - Must possess one (1) year of Specialized Experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the Medical Technician at the GS-06 level. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes: (a) technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g. biological laboratory technician work that required application of the methods and techniques for the positions being filled. OR Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-06 level such as successful completion of (a) 6) months of graduate education in an accredited institution with a major in a field directly related to the duties of this position? (Transcript Required) OR Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-06 level. To calculate, determine the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage for the 1 year of experience required for the GS-6; then determine your education as a percentage of the 2 years of education that meet the requirements for the GS-6. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring walking, standing, bending, and reaching to collect specimens from different hospital locations and the different sections of the laboratory for specimen delivery/handling and inventory control. Reaching and bending is required to obtain supplies, operate equipment, and occasionally lift containers of supplies or reagents. The work requires above average agility and dexterity with hand/eye coordination.
