East Pierre Landscape and Garden Center Greenhouse / plant nursery manager in Pierre, South Dakota

We are an independent garden center with retail greenhouse, plant nursery, landscape design and installation, and gift and supplies store located just outside Pierre, South Dakota. Established in 1952, over the last 4 years our sales have increased over 12% annually by offering quality products, exceptional customer service, a fun shopping destination, family friendly events, and educational opportunities and hands-on workshops to our customers.We are looking for applicants for a year round, 40 hour a week supervisory position. The position offers flexible work hours, employee discounts, retirement savings options, limited health coverage, and earned vacation time. Hourly wage will depend on qualifications and experience with a 90 day performance review.The successful candidate must have the following qualifications: able to work some weekends including all weekends in the months of May and June and the 3rd Saturday in October; knowledge of growing and caring for plants in commercial greenhouse and nursery environments; ability to effectively communicate with customers both in person and over the phone and with other employees; past work experience in a retail setting; a clean driving record; and be able to conduct oneself professionally at all times. The position is at times physically challenging, requiring the ability to regularly lift 40lb and be able to walk/stand on concrete or gravel floors for entire shifts.Additional skills desired are: supervising workers of all ages and experience levels; being South Dakota Commercial Pesticide Applicator certified; experience with using hand tools like drills and saws; experience operating skid steers; using social media for business purposes; display design experience and creativity; developing work schedules; and leading monthly educational seminars and hands-on workshops. The successful applicant will be expected to learn the majority of these additional skills if they do not have them already.This position will work directly with the owners and would join a staff of 2 other full time and up to 10 seasonal/part-time employees, as well as a separate landscape division.
