Facebook Research Intern, Human-Computer Interaction (PhD) in Pierre, South Dakota
Facebook's mission is to give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together. Through our family of apps and services, we're building a different kind of company that connects billions of people around the world, gives them ways to share what matters most to them, and helps bring people closer together. Whether we're creating new products or helping a small business expand its reach, people at Facebook are builders at heart. Our global teams are constantly iterating, solving problems, and working together to empower people around the world to build community and connect in meaningful ways. Together, we can help people build stronger communities - we're just getting started.
At Facebook Reality Labs, our goal is to invent the user interface technologies that will drive the next generation of augmented-reality experiences. Our aim is to unleash human potential by erasing the bottlenecks between intent and action. As a Research Intern, you will focus on developing novel interactions and interfaces for augmented reality glasses. Your work would involve developing novel input techniques for complex interactions, modeling interaction intent, designing interfaces for system uncertainty disambiguation, and/or personalizing the system based on user actions. Our adaptive interaction research lies at the intersection of cognitive science, machine learning, and human-computer interaction. You will work with world-leading collaborators and mentors in the AR/VR, machine learning, neuroscience, and HCI fields.
Plan and execute cutting-edge research developing novel input interactions, modeling interaction intent, designing adaptive interfaces, and/or personalizing the system based on user actions.
Collaborate with researchers, engineers, and designers across disciplines to solve complex problems and evaluate the effectiveness of developed solutions through user evaluations.
Work with leading academic researchers to produce publishable research that appears in top-tier journals or at leading international conferences in the HCI field.
PhD in the field of human-computer interaction, cognitive science, computational neuroscience, artificial intelligence, computer science, or similar.
3+ years of experience with scientific programming languages such as Python, R, and/or C++/C#.
Proven track record of achieving research results and innovation as demonstrated by minimum 2 first-authored peer-reviewed publications and/or patents.
Interpersonal skills: cross-group collaboration and cross-culture collaboration.
Must obtain work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment.
Familiarity with AR/VR technologies and literature.
Experience with Unity game engine.
Experience building models of interaction intent for real-time interactive scenarios (e.g., gesture recognition, task inference).
Experience with machine learning (e.g., time-series modeling, deep learning, RL, personalization).
Intent to return to degree-program after the completion of the internship/co-op
