Job Summary:

The Lead Driver is responsible for assisting with the hiring, training and ongoing performance management for drivers within their designated area while driving an assigned route. This position requires flexibility with schedules, a strong focus on safety and holding drivers accountable for compliance with DOT regulations. The Lead Driver reports to the Terminal Manager.

Lead Driver Responsibilities

  • Active participant in the hiring process with management and HR including road test and in person interviews

  • Work with temporary agencies to secure replacement drivers and coordinate driver’s time off schedules

  • Monitor work habits of drivers and ensure that drivers are properly caring for their vehicles. Report inconsistencies to management

  • Point of contact for required vehicle maintenance and repairs when required

  • Train new drivers and provide existing drivers with training as needed (post-accident, ride-along)

  • Provide communication and share information with drivers, provide feedback

  • Follow all proper policies and procedures; instructions and details of work assigned

Driver Safety & Compliance

  • Adhere to planned routing, meet delivery time and minimize overall mileage and travel time. Follow prescribed travel path, adjusting to mitigate delay only when necessary

  • Conduct activities in a safe manner, follow corporate safety guidelines and requirements (no cell phone when driving, pre-trip/post trip inspections, etc) and proactively address unsafe conditions observed, lock vehicles and complete DOT requirements. Keep a clean and orderly cab and trailer.

  • Prepare truck for operation by inspecting and documenting general condition, validating adherence to DOT standards.

  • Demonstrate safe driving skills including proper following distance, proper eye lead, proper stopping distance, checking intersections, using safety wedge, properly using horn, left/right turn signals, using seatbelt, checking, scanning mirrors, maintain proper speed, observing proper lane, park in appropriate locations

  • Ensure a safe work environment and abide by all Matheson safety rules

  • Apply basic skills and may develop advanced skills using tools and equipment appropriate for the position

  • Maintain contact with home terminal/dispatch center and drivers to communicate information or delivery updates

  • Provide support and communication on driver workplace injury, partner with HR and Risk on investigations and workplace environment.

Experience/Qualifications:

  • Valid CDL Class A Driver's license that meets DOT requirements

  • High School diploma or general education degree

  • 3 to 5 years related experience and/or training

  • Be at least 21 years of age for DOT covered position

  • Successful completion of post offer background checks, DOT physical, and motor vehicle moving violations records check.

Schedule:

  • Lead Driver is responsible for driving 4 days a week. 1 day in the office.

Example:

Route 1: Rapid City to Hartford, SC - Relay (home daily)

Route 2: Rapid City to Butte, MT (11 hour run). Layover in Motel 10-12 hours when in Butte, MT.

Special Requirements:

  • Must pass a drug screen

  • Must pass a job related physical assessment

COMPENSATION:

$23.98/hr+$5.03/hrfor health and welfare paid up to the first 40 hours). Eligible for full-time benefits (medical, dental, vision, 401k) after 60 days.

Non-benefited wage: $30.67/hr(no benefits)
