PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Directly support the Financial Manager of the corporate shared services and indirectly support the Financial Managers of electric utilities, gas utilities, and coal mine in timely and accurate reporting of all financial data, including analyzing and providing financial reports and presentations required by company management, regulatory, and operations as well as external stakeholders. Responsible for the development, analysis, interpretation and communication of statistical and accounting information relating to actual services provided, capital expenditures, and development of operating budgets, strategic plans and forecasts, and related comparative reporting. Develop and implement process improvements to increase overall efficiency of accounting, analysis and reporting. Establish and maintain effective internal controls. Manage competing priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Financial Manager Service Company and Utility Holdings

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Actively participate in the development and preparation of annual budgets, strategic plans and forecasts, and develop service billing matrices and methodologies.

  • Perform the financial analysis activities and provide the analysis and interpretation of results related to manager and upper management.

  • Establish strong relationships across the company to advance effective communication and coordination across departments and companies.

  • Coordinate the preparation of all accounting and financial reports for management operations review and regulatory reporting. Constantly seek ways to improve the participation with all departments in the use of accounting information for planning and problem solving purposes.

  • Prepare the reconciliation, month end close, and variance analysis process for Financial Managers.

  • Take ownership of individual and team projects and ensure timely, accurate and complete accounting and analysis for all work assigned.

  • Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Ensure controls are in place, documented and operating effectively to support strong internal controls over financial reporting in compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley requirements.

  • Prepare and analyze reports for a variety of departments and external requests. Ensure information is accurate and presented in a useful and understandable format before timely distribution.

  • Review and/or prepare financial statements and analyses. Interpret the results and communicate to internal and external stakeholders as needed.

  • Assist in the preparation of financial modeling and analysis for the strategic plan, budgeting and forecasting.

  • Perform assigned duties in a professional manner to facilitate the objectives and goals of the company and to enhance the image of Finance and Accounting.

  • Obtain a strong understanding of regulatory processes

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform project related responsibilities as defined by the Financial Management Team. This could include activities such as assistance in operating goal development, monthly reporting of operating goals, special projects and analysis.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers, all finance and accounting departments, financial managers, treasury, tax, regulatory team, employees, supervisor, upper management, operations, internal audit, and external audit.

  • Must communicate effectively at all organizational levels.

EXPERIENCE:

  • 3 to 5 years of experience in the financial and business experience required.

  • Public accounting or audit experience beneficial.

  • Financial modeling experience preferred.

  • Prior experience in energy or utility related industry preferred.

EDUCATION:

  • B.S. in Finance, Accounting or related field required.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Advanced proficiency in Excel to create and support complex spreadsheets.

  • Experience working with Hyperion Essbase and Hyperion Planning a plus.

  • Experience working with a large accounting software system – PeopleSoft Experience a plus.

  • Understanding of financial analysis.

  • Solid understanding of internal controls.

  • Proficiency in automated accounting and/or budgeting systems.

  • Working understanding of utility operations and a basic understanding of regulatory/ratemaking processes and methods preferred.

  • Ability to become proficient in PeopleSoft, Essbase, and other accounting systems.

  • Ability to make decisions with minimal supervision.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate difficult accounting topics to various levels of financial and non-financial personnel.

  • Ability to drive effective decisions through use of GAAP, FERC and other accounting research.

  • Ability to perform accounting duties of an above average difficulty.

  • Strong computer and analytical skills.

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.

  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of business information.

CERTIFICATIONS/CREDENTIALS:

  • CPA, MBA, CMA, CIA or CFA strongly preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to travel approximately once a month.
