Synchrony Senior Database Administrator/Architect in RAPID CITY, South Dakota

Job Description:

Role Summary/Purpose:

The Database Architect will be part of Synchrony Platform Engineering Team, to support our multi-cloud Oracle and MySQL Enterprise database technology design, build and automation. The DB Architect will play a significant role with stakeholders from Finance, Sales Operations, and IT teams to provide end-to-end usage, reporting and billing capabilities for our users.

The successful candidate will analyze the current system, participate in roadmap and project planning efforts, and will have ownership for delivering it.

The Database Architect will have a wide range of engagement on projects and initiatives that may include:

· Enterprise Data Lake to support Enterprise Customer Engagement initiative

· Architect and migrate database into Public/Private Cloud to enable Synchrony’s cloud presence and capabilities

· Emerging database technologies to support key business initiatives

· Automation and improvement of existing Database infrastructure and platforms

Essential Responsibilities:

· Engineering Oracle and MySQL database implementation along with strategic enhancements.

· Implement automation of database operations like upgrades and patching using Ansible technology

· Responsible for the design and delivery of the mission critical stack, with focus on security, resiliency, scale, and performance.

· Automate cross-platform oracle database migrations using Ansible technology

· Formulate ways to enhance capacity planning and demand forecasting, software performance analysis, system tuning, database infrastructure monitoring and backups/restore capabilities to ensure 24x7 availability ​

· Work closely with cross-functional teams in support of database migrations to newer platforms

· Adhere to Organizational Change Management, Incident Management and Request Management processes in support of production and non-production environments

· Diagnose database issues and coordinate fixes with database vendors as required, in timely manner

· Support the standing standards policies and procedures of the engineer team

· Assist with developing junior to mid-level engineers with mentorship and career coaching

· Perform other duties and/or special projects as assigned

Qualifications/Requirements:

· Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 7+ years of experience performing database build/administration (ideally leveraging an agile methodology)

· 2+ years Expert knowledge of Linux / Unix / Windows systems

· 5+ years’ experience as a Senior DBA or Database automation Engineer

Desired Characteristics:

· Experience with production systems and dealing with production issues

· Expertise in designing/configuring mission critical, highly available and high throughput Databases (MySQL and Oracle)

· Competence in using scripting + programming languages to automate frequently executed activities

· Database experience with MySQL and Oracle

· Expertise in Oracle RAC and Oracle stand-alone administration

· In-depth knowledge of partitioning, RMAN, Grid Control and Oracle Enterprise Manager

· Experience of public cloud (AWS/GCP/Azure) RDBMS design and engineering

· Experience with data replication (DataGuard), high availability, and data migrations tools and techniques for Oracle and MySQL database

· Knowledge of MySQL administration, backup/recovery, replication (master/slave), user management and encryption/tokenization.

· Experience in migrating Database from on-prem to public/private cloud

· Has an automation mindset and hands on experience in implementing automation using Ansible and scripting languages such as shell script or Perl.

· Collaborate with others to troubleshoot and resolve escalated production issues

· Establish and consult on best practices and standard operating procedures for development, deployment, support, break-fix, and systems management

· Assess usage and utilization trends to make appropriate design and implementation recommendations towards scaling our architecture

· Scripting Proficiency in PowerShell, Ruby, Python, Perl or other

· Provide assistance to application development team with SQL query optimization and resolve complex database problems through research and root cause analysis

· Diagnose database issues and coordinate fixes with database vendors as required, in timely manner

Eligibility Requirements:

· You must be 18 years or older

· You must have a high school diploma or equivalent

· You must be willing to take a drug test, submit to a background investigation and submit fingerprints as part of the onboarding process

· You must be able to satisfy the requirements of Section 19 of the Federal Deposit Insurance Act.

· New hires (Level 4-7) must have 9 months of continuous service with the company before they are eligible to post on other roles. Once this new hire time in position requirement is met, the associate will have a minimum 6 months’ time in position before they can post for future non-exempt roles. Employees, level 8 or greater, must have at least 24 months’ time in position before they can post. All internal employees must have at least a “consistently meets expectations” performance rating and have approval from your manager to post (or the approval of your manager and HR if you don’t meet the time in position or performance requirement).

The salary range for this position is 85,000.00 - 170,000.00 USD Annual

This position is remote, where you will work from home, and may require you to occasionally commute to one our offices for in person engagement activities such as team meetings, training and culture events. We’re proud to offer you flexibility, so remote candidates will be considered who live near any of Synchrony hubs that support our Enterprise Operations including: Stamford, CT, Canton, OH, Phoenix, AZ, Dayton, OH, Altamonte Springs, FL, Charlotte, NC or Kansas City, KS

Salaries are adjusted according to market in CA and Metro NY and some positions are bonus eligible.
