Summary

Raven Aerostar is seeking a mechanical or aerospace intern to help advance our perception and stratospheric balloon systems. Activities may include: design, prototype, and test mechanical and electrical components and assemblies to be used on stratospheric balloons, airships, and parachute recovery systems. The successful candidate will be able to work 40 hrs/week during the summer of 2021 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota (there are also opportunities for extended coop work in the spring or summer).

Essential Functions

  • Research, develop, and test designs including airframe structures, electronic layout/integration, and launch equipment.

  • Develop designs, create drawing packages, BOMs, and assembly instructions

  • Procure hardware from suppliers

  • Perform or facilitate installation/testing related to the product, system, or process.

  • Participate in existing product improvements or processes.

  • Work with manufacturing.

  • Create and update documentation for designs at various phases of a project.

  • May assist with quote or request for quote process.

  • Perform technical & hands on work to prototype concepts.

  • May be called upon to perform comparable duties of a similar or related nature and/or assist in other areas as needed.

  • Complete projects as assigned within internship discipline.

  • Attend Raven sponsored training and educational seminars.

  • Engage and participate in Raven sponsored events.

  • Work closely with assigned mentor and manager to reach a successful completion of internship.

  • Provide periodic updates to managers and peers on assigned project(s).

  • Complete end of internship presentation.

  • Demonstrates the Dimensions of Competition and Raven Team Member Values in their daily actions and encourages their teams to do the same.

  • Learning, understanding, continuously improving, and promoting the division’s quality management system in accordance with ISO standards.

Qualifications

  • Ability to handle multiple projects and tasks simultaneously, without close supervision.

  • Problem-solving abilities. Ability to identify waste and creatively look for solutions.

  • Ability to work with high level of confidentiality.

  • Capacity to be flexible and multitask.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with team members and leadership staff.

  • Prior relevant work experience (including internships) desired

  • Proficient with a computer, including Microsoft Office.

  • Familiarity with 2D & 3D CAD programs, SolidWorks desired.

  • Hands-on attitude required

  • Desired experience designing for common metal fabrication and assembly techniques; Mills/Lathes, welding, and sheet metal

Education:

  • Sophomore, junior, or senior level standing in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering.
