JOB SUMMARY

Assists other research investigators by performing non-complex research and experimentation following established protocols. Performs routine lab and equipment maintenance, such as cleaning glassware, counter tops, and equipment. May be responsible for calibration of instruments. Sets-up and operates various scientific apparatus. Assists with research projects. Makes intellectual contributions to current research activities and contributes to the design of experiments and new techniques. Prepares and weighs samples for testing and analysis. Conducts tests, assays and other protocols as needed and under supervision. Properly documents procedural actions as well as results. Analyzes and/or summarizes findings. Reviews and researches current literature as directed related to current research projects. Basic or general knowledge of laboratory procedures required. May be expected to perform more complex scientific techniques, such as isolate and maintain various cell types in culture, including stem cells and perform studies involving animal models. Receives and stores laboratory supplies; sets order limits and calculates replenishment orders. Speaks/writes using correct language, mechanics, and gestures.

DEPARTMENT DETAILS

This position will have a particular emphasis in the bioinformatic analysis of genomic data and will therefore be responsible for collaborative efforts within Sanford Research to analyze data, advise on workflows, and prepare data for publication for genomic studies which are being undertaken in the laboratories at Sanford Research. Must be able to analyze genomic data from microarrays, ChIP-seq, RNA-seq, and other next-generation genomic techniques. Skills must involve quality control of next-generation sequencing results, read alignment, peak calling, transcript alignment and annotation, differential gene expression analysis, and gene network analysis. As such proficiency in bowtie/bwa, macs/spp/peakseq, tophat/cufflinks/star, samtools, bedtools are required. Proficiency in Linux, bash, R/Bioconductor is vital. Experience in perl, java is preferred. Experience building and managing databases is favorable. A strong background in biology is strongly encouraged to ensure proper interfacing with bench scientists and to assist in the “wet lab” job responsibilities. Candidates must be strong at multitasking, proficient communicators, highly organized, and willing to work as part of a team to drive cutting edge research.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in a clinical, health or life science field required. Demonstrated prior experience and competence in research a environment preferred.
