POET Tax Accountant in Sioux Falls, South Dakota

ABOUT THE TAX DEPARTMENT POET’s tax department is responsible for managing the POET Companies’ tax filings, accounting for income taxes and tax planning. The team works closely with all areas of the business including financial reporting, investor relations, and treasury departments to ensure compliance with tax rules and regulations and reduce the tax burden of the company.


The Tax Accountant is responsible for providing support to POET’s tax function. To succeed in this role, you should have an eye for detail, an interest in learning about tax regulations and laws and a desire to take personal responsibility for completing tasks and solving problems. This position is ideal for a result driven, deadline-oriented, candidate with strong analytical skills.

This Accountant is a member of the corporate tax department and is involved in tax compliance, tax planning and decision-making throughout the year, working as part of a team to accomplish goals. If tax accounting interests you but a tax season doesn’t, then this job is for you!


  • Review and discuss current tax theories and laws.

  • Research filing requirements and tax issues using internal revenue code, treasury regulations and other relevant authorities/guidance.

  • Collaborate with other departments on information gathering and process improvements.

  • Respond to information requests from investors or other team members.

  • Prepare tax returns, tax provisions and supporting workpapers for corporations, flow-through entities and individuals.

  • Prepare POET’s monthly income tax accrual and calculate required estimated tax payments.

  • Participate in training opportunities, formal or hands-on.

  • You have an Undergraduate Degree in Accounting with a minimum of 3.0 in both your major and overall.

  • Solid interpersonal and customer service skills.

  • Ability to handle multiple priorities.

  • Excellent organizational skills, communications skills, and most importantly, the ability to work well in a team.

  • We don’t expect you to know everything but expect a willingness to learn.

  • If you know the basics of Microsoft Office Suite. You’re capable of learning new programs.


  • Prior experience with tax preparation or completion of tax-focused college courses.

  • CPA license or interest in pursuing a CPA license.
