Indian Health Service Practical Nurse in Sisseton, South Dakota

Summary This position is the Practical Nurse located in the Nursing Department at the Sisseton IHS, Sisseton, SD. This position provides practical nursing duties in accordance with sound professional nursing principles so that basic and special needs of patients are met. The incumbent reports to the Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON). Responsibilities Provides age specific nursing care services to ambulatory care clinics, general medical, surgical, pediatrics, intensive care/critical care patients. (Prepares and administers following physician order for medication both orally and by intramuscular injection, performs catheterization, changes surgical dressings, suctioning and irrigates body orifices. Triage and screens by obtaining vital signs, gross and subtle observations and facts regarding patient treatment and progress; documents assessment on patient record. Prepares patients for special laboratory tests, examinations, and treatments. Sets up and manages specialized equipment such as suction, oxygen, EKG and a variety of drainage tubes; labels tissue/specimens.) Provides patient and family education, (medication use, activities, diet, self-care and assists with special to simple tests and procedures) Requirements Conditions of Employment Must pass pre-employment examination. Background Investigation: If you are selected for this vacancy, you must undergo a pre-employment fingerprint check and background investigation. Fingerprint results and background investigation documentation must be cleared prior to hire. Qualifications To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S) GS-0620-05 and GS-0620-06 Licensure: I have a current license to practice as practical or vocational nurse in a State or territory of the United States or the District of Columbia or I have applied for a license to practice. I have 1 year of nursing experience that equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position. This experience Is equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level and Includes nursing care work In a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other supervised medical, nursing, or patient care facility that provided a practical knowledge of human body structure and sterile techniques and procedures as described in the vacancy announcement. Examples include: observing, recording and reporting changes in behavior of patients; carrying out nursing procedures according to guidelines and a nursing plan of care; providing instructions to the patient and/or family of the patient; taking vital signs and measurements; setting up medical equipment for procedures; and assisting physicians and registered nurses with procedures. B. I do not have the experience as described above. Minimum Qualification, GS-06, Practical Nurse In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements for this series, select one response below that best describes your education, experience, or combination of education and experience which demonstrates your ability to perform the work of this position at the GS-04 level. This experience is equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level and includes nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other supervised medical, nursing, or patient care facility that provided a practical knowledge of human body structure and sterile techniques and procedures as described in the vacancy announcement. Examples include: observing, recording and reporting changes in behavior of patients and taking action to alleviate problems; initiating a plan of action to carry out a nursing plan of care; providing education to patients and families of patients; performing a range of treatment procedures such as inserting catheters, sterile dressing changes, administering medications, obtaining peripheral IV access, giving immunizations; and assisting physicians and registered nurses with procedures. B. I do not have the experience as described above. You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement. Education There are no education requirements. Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6, or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. This position is covered by a Bargaining Unit. This position has promotion potential to the GS-06 grade level. Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your demonstrated ability to perform the higher level duties, the continuing need for the higher level duties, and "Regulatory/Administrative" approval. Promotion to the next higher grade level is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied.
