Job Summary

The Parts, Garments and Accessories (PG&A) Packaging Engineer is accountable and responsible for leading the design, procurement and testing in all areas of product packaging including materials, process and sourcing to maximize customer experience, safety, quality, efficiency and sustainability. Our customers and distribution centers expect their product orders to be delivered in pristine condition, requiring packaging which sufficiently protects product through the rigors of a global supply chain. Similarly, our packaging materials and processes must achieve desired goals for branding, presentation and sustainability. The PG&A Packaging Engineer will collaborate with product sourcing, operations and external partners to develop and execute packaging strategies, standards, processes and corrective actions which drive favorable outcomes. The PG&A product portfolio spans roughly 80,000 products sourced from over 500 global suppliers. We receive and ships millions of packages annually, primarily through seven different global distribution centers to thousands of customers in over 100 countries.

Responsibilities / Duties:

  • Develop packages, package components and packaging systems that best meet the needs of internal / external customers to support strategic business needs for growth, quality and productivity.

  • Develop test procedures for all packages, package components and packaging systems to ensure we meet all necessary safety, quality and density goals.

  • Manage the key relationships with outside suppliers and contractors on a project-specific basis. Monitor performance and ensure that projects are executed in line with the overall strategic plan and are on time and on budget.

  • Develop and direct the budget process for specific assigned projects while ensuring projects are on time, on budget and targeted return on investment has been achieved.

  • Serves as a liaison between Packaging and other functions to support product launch activities.

  • Seek out and coordinate cost (materials, labor, freight) reduction opportunities.

  • Collaborate with Suppliers (including drop-ship), Engineering, Sourcing, DCs Operations, Carriers (small package, LTL, TL, Ocean, Rail and Intermodal) to ensure that products flow efficiently through the Supply Chain without damage.

  • Collaborate with the Product Development, Category Management and Marketing teams on customer facing packaging design projects.

  • Collaborate with the PG&A Quality & Safety Manager to identify warranty reduction opportunities.

  • Communicate issues including but not limited to: risks to New Product Introduction schedules, cost, and quality on a timely basis. Actively seek and communicate mitigation opportunities and solutions.

  • Seek and recommend suppliers for all forms of packaging recommend best methods for packaging and work closely with Purchasing, Logistics, Sourcing and Materials to manage quality, cost, delivery, and supply chain needs.

  • Provide technical and resource information, advise and consult on packaging best practices to enhance business performance.

  • Direct corrective actions with service providers and vendors to resolve packaging issues.

  • Identify opportunities for returnable packaging and drive implementation through Supply Chain.

  • Review new designs and parts to recommend special packaging needs.

  • Maintains standard pack data and informs affected personnel of changes.

  • Oversee execution of PFEP (Plan for Every Part) packaging data and documentation.

Education & Experience:

  • B.S. in Packaging, Packaging Science, Packaging Engineering.

  • 3-5 years Packaging Engineering experience in automotive or industrial packaging preferred.

  • Experience in the design, development, and testing of expendable and returnable packaging. Design/procurement of fabricated metal crates is desired.

Technical Skills:

  • In-depth knowledge of packaging components, material compatibility and technologies related to development, testing and implementation of new product packaging and delivery systems.

  • Knowledge in control procedures, such as the Change Management process, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

  • Strong computer skills with ability to quickly learn new software/applications.

  • Familiarity with Solid Works and a proficiency with MS Excel desired.

  • Project Management: plan, develop and execute.

  • Ability to effectively influence and work in cooperation with cross functional teams.

  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills - ability to work in a matrix organization and effectively lead without direct positional authority.

  • Strong communication, presentation and teamwork skills including the ability to write clear, concise technical documentation.

  • Ability to travel and support product launches and technical problem solving.
